With the winds from Hurricane Sandy blowing across Lake Michigan, some folks headed down to the lakefront to check out the wave action. Would Summerfest be safe from the 10-15 foot waves that were predicted to wash ashore? An aerial view of the Milwaukee shore along the festival grounds shows that it's protected by a stone outcropping, breakwater, and back fill that was set in place years ago. In fact, it's a great fishing spot that used to be frequented by anglers during the off season.
The waves came, but were not nearly as bad as predicted. The shores along Milwaukee suffered little damage, and the rocks along Summerfest showed little sign of the storm. Before you know it, we will be announcing the first Marcus Amphitheater 2013 headline act.

Summerfest Grounds Undergo Controlled Burn Yesterday

The smoke could be seen drifting through the streets of downtown Milwaukee yesterday. Some thought that there was a fire in the Third Ward. It was a "controlled burn" of the grasses that surround the Marcus Amphitheater on the Summerfest grounds. The Milwaukee Fire Department had everything under control, as they burned off what had become a potential fire hazard. This unusually dry and warm winter left tall, dead grass along the hills that are built up around the Marcus Amp. With little relief in site, Summerfest management felt it would be wise to have the grasses burned off. Still, it left many people searching for the source of the smoke and ash that permeated the area.

Summerfest Grounds Southern Renovation

The ink is dry on the plans to invest 25 million dollars on the south end of the Summerfest grounds. I have always felt that the area in question could use a face lift. Now it's going to be a reality.
The plans include a new south end box office, new restrooms, and of course the most important part, reconfiguring of the M&I stage. This will make the M&I stage change its third in just as many years. I liked the fact that they moved the M&I stage closer to the lake shore. The plan is to move it even further east.
The Briggs and Stratton stage area will also be updated. The Summerfest improvements will take two years, as this is the biggest project in nearly ten years.

It's Indian Summer at the Summerfest Grounds. This is one of the last events to take place on the lakefront, before they close the gates until 2011. A veteran's parade will start at 3pm, and the pow wow will run the entire weekend. Indian Summer admission is $12 for adults, children under the age of 12 get in for free.

Summerfest Grounds to host Verge Festival

Milwaukee Verge Festival will surely draw an "alternative rock" crowd. With AFI and Weezer headlining the festival, and many other alternative acts booked, this could easily draw thousands of fans to the Summerfest grounds.
Riversplash is no more, and that opened the door for another Milwaukee festival. June 4-5 is the weekend to head to lake. The configuration of which stages are to be used has yet to be determined. Verge festival is a great way to attract younger music fans to the Summerfest grounds.

Milwaukee Alternative Festival June 4, 2010
The Summerfest grounds will play host to the yet-t0-be-named alternative music festival on June 4th and 5th. In a previous post, I failed to list the actual dates. So far, we have yet to hear of the musical acts that will be headlining. It's February, and there is lots of time to book the bands. If you enter the "name this festival" contest, and you win, you will get lots of free passes to the event, and a $100 gift card to be used at Summerfest 2010. Not a bad deal.

Concert announced for 2008 (sort of...)

Check out pollstar.com. They are reporting a Los Lobos show for the Summerfest grounds scheduled for Friday, August 29th, 2008. No word on concert tickets yet. I think this might be one of the weekends of the many ethnic festivals the Summerfest grounds play host to.
See, I told you the wait wouldn't be that long.
